Veterans Memorial Park, Olathe, KS - Memorial Day 2019

veterans memorial park, Olathe, KS

I drive by Veteran's Memorial Park in Olathe every day going to and from work.

When I stopped, the city crews were there getting it cleaned up for Memorial Day.

The first plaque I saw was for an army nurse, Emma Graff, RN. With the commentary in the news about nurses lately, I found this to be very special. Given I nearly passed out from seeing my nail ripped off my finger last week, I can only imagine the sights Emma saw, the lives she fought to save, and the hardships she endured to do so.

There were commemorative benches all along a path between the trees. The Keeney's had family serve in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.

On PFC Cale C Miller's bench, the quote reads, "The American soldier does not fight because he hates who is in front of him. He fights because he loves who is behind him."

There is a beautiful stone etching of The Four Chaplains

1. Johnny P. Washington

2. Clark V. Poling

3. Alexander Goode

4. George L. Fox

that reads: "To all chaplains who ministered to those men and women who stood in harms way as sentinels of our freedom."

The path wraps around to a giant star of which each point aligns with a pillar engraved with the emblems of a military branch: Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps.

Finally, in the center of the circle drive stands an American Flag and a POW flag.

If you live in Olathe or the Kansas City area, it's something worth checking out.

In memory of all of those who gave their lives so we could have freedom.

Have a blessed Memorial Day.
